Comment on Evan Bayh doesn’t get it by Brian Napoletano

Evan Bayh may "get it" more than you realize. The Democrats have never been much more enthusiastic than the Republicans about the prospects of the public actually playing an active role in designing and implementing public policy. Instead, the Democratic Party usually positions itself as a buffer between the public and the political process--hence its reputation for "co-opting" genuinely progressive public initiatives. From this perspective, Bayh's failure to encourage public engagement on the issue of campaign finance is consistent with both parties' primary objective, which is to keep the public from interfering in the governing of the nation by the select few who run it. This "just relax and let us take care of it" mentality has been a defining feature of US politics for generations, and even the Obama administration has yet to indicate that it sees things any differently.

I've always considered myself a liberal Christian rather than a Christian liberal because the first word in both phrases is used as an adjective and the second as a noun. I am a Christian who can be described as liberal rather than a liberal who can be described as a Christian.

It sounds like we have similar reasons for using opposite designations. :)
